records, the trial and hearing notes of Jack Ruby's
incarceration, the research notes and drafts to Tom Lea's "King
Ranch" and Diane Smith's "Armstrong Chronicle", historical
information relating to Texas and ranching, the stories of his
youth in Martin, Tennessee, and reports issued by McCombs while
he was a reporter in Central and South America in the 1930's and
1940's. Included in the collection are the letters and
photographs of the McCombs, Holland, and Freeman families dating
back to the 1850's.

NOTES: Correspondence, financial documents, legal documents,
photographs, certificate, memorabilia, clippings, periodicals,
and books. Collection is primarily in French language. Included
are certified birth certificates of several family members, a
copy of the act to incorporate the Societe de Colonisation
Europeo-Americaine, Francois Santerre's inscription into the
society, and deeds to property in La Reunion. Most of the
correspondence is from Augustin Houdin of St. Leonard, France.
Memorabilia includes greeting, advertising, and religious cards,
engravings, illustrations, and homemade paper items. Santerre's
French Army record books are present as well as 162 books and
several periodicals which were a part of the family's library.
Santerre and his wife and six children immigrated from France in
1856 to join La Reunion Colony, a socialist experiment founded in
1855 by the Societe de Colonisation Europeo-Americaine. The
colony, located a few miles west of Dallas, Texas, dissolved
after only two years, but the Santerres remained in the area.

(1876- 1921) with correspondence written to him by his second
wife Carrie Averill Slaughter and legal materials pertaining to
Slaughter's death and the division of his estate (1921). Of
particular interest is a speech written by Slaughter in 1907
entitled "The Passing of the Range" and his scrapbook pertaining
to the Confederate Veteran's Reunion held in Dallas, Texas, in
1902.
Trial driver, Texas Ranger, banker, philanthropist, and
cattleman. Born 1837 Sabine County, Texas. With his father
George Webb Slaughter and brothers, established frontier ranch in
Palo Pinto County, Texas, in 1857. Participated in Civil War as
frontier militia and Texas Rangers. Drove cattle over Chisholm
Trail and later moved operations to West Texas where by 1905 he
owned 40,000 cattle and controlled over one million acres.
Founder of American National Bank of Dallas (1884), and cofounder
of Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (1877),
Texas Baptist Education Commission (1897) and Baylor Hospital of
Dallas, Texas (1904). Died 1919 Dallas, Texas.

cassette tape, newspapers, and books. Includes a family tree;
scrapbooks complied by Joshua Louis Hicks of poems and essays
clipped from newspapers; Socialist Party membership cards, union
membership and working cards; the World War I diary of Louis
Hodge Hicks; The Hatchet, July 19-30, 1918; The Arrow Head,
February 27 -May 2, 1919; the Scout, September, 1911; Dallas
newspapers and national magazines on President Kennedy's
assassination, Lyndon Johnson, the moon walk, and the Gerald Ford
administration, 1963-1977; and an oral history interview with
Louis H. Hicks.
Also included are various Dallas Democratic Precinct Convention
minutes and correspondence and clippings concerning Louis Hicks'
involvement in Democratic Party activities. Louis H. Hicks'
papers are primarily photocopies. Includes the September 13,
1900, issue of the Galveston Daily News covering the Galveston
hurricane.
Louis H. Hicks was a writer, editor, and printer. He was active
throughout his career in several Texas labor union locals of the
International Typographical Union. His father, Joshua, was a
pioneer printer, publisher, and editor during the late 19th and
early 20th centuries in West Texas. He was a member of the
Socailist Party of America and an ardent Prohibitionist.

NOTES: Correspondence, financial records, newspaper clippings,
pamphlets, brochures, house bills, news releases, certificates,
reports, rosters, minutes, speeches, biographical data, and
scrapbooks. Includes campaign records, certificates of election,
and legislative files as well as personal correspondence. The
scrapbook is a photocopy of newspaper clippings and
correspondence which trace Hawn's political career. The papers
include a history and records of Angels, Incorporated, a Dallas
area school for mentally retarded children, and a report of two
Wood County cemeteries (which includes a list of persons buried
there): Smyrna Cemetery (1873-1972) and Old Mt. Zion Cemetery
(1893-1972).
Hawn was the representative from the Pleasant Grove section of
Dallas during the 61st through 63rd sessions (1969-1973) of the
Texas House of Representatives. He was a retired Captain of the
Dallas Fire Department and served six years as Manager of the
Pleasant Grove Chamber of Commerce before being elected a state
representative in 1968.
